Visualization Wall Grand Opening

On Feb. 8, 2008, the Center for Scientific Visualization opened in Anderson Hall. The interdisciplinary Center was made possible by a $350,000 grant from the National Science Foundation through the support of the School of Engineering, Arts and Sciences, and University Information Technology and with collaboration of Tufts investigators like math's Bruce Boghosian (pictured below).

Visualization Wall Grand Opening Caroline Cao, assistant professor of mechanical engineering, and Kyle Maxwell, (CS'08), use the Center to create effective surgical simulations that use visualization in conjunction with haptics, the study of touch, to incorporate tactile force feedback. Engineers Head to Middle East for World Future Energy Summit

Engineers Head to Middle East for World Future Energy Summi In January, Jacob Mandel (ME'08), Jared Rodriguez (CEE'08), and Jayson Uppal (CEE'08) traveled to the United Arab Emirates for the World Future Energy Summit. The three engineers from the Energy Security Initiative, a Tufts' student-run group out of the Institute for Global Leadership, met with world leaders including U.S. Secretary of Energy, Samuel Bodman, to discuss how Tufts students are making a difference.

Lautze Dams Malaria in Ethiopia

Lautze Dams Malaria in Ethiopia Jonathan Lautze, a WSSS doctoral recipient, researches how to curb the transmission of malaria through water resource engineering and management. By controlling a dam's reservoir water levels, the development of malaria-carrying mosquito larvae can be disrupted. Read more about malaria and water management

Caterpillar-Inspired Robot Morphs into Modern Art

Caterpillar-Inspired Robot Morphs into Modern Art The prototype for the first fully soft-bodied robot, developed by faculty researchers at Tufts' Advanced Technology Laboratory, will be part of an exhibition on "Design and the Elastic Mind" at New York's Museum of Modern Art from February 24 to May 12, 2008 Find out more about this exciting exhibit

Dean's Corner:

The new year welcomes exciting new developments for Tufts School of Engineering. Planning is underway for some substantial facilities expansion projects that will immeasurably enrich our educational and research environment.

In the next few months, Tufts Gordon Institute will move to its new home at 200 Boston Avenue. TGI's new location will provide close proximity to Tufts' Advanced Technology Laboratory research activities, creating new synergies while freeing up space in the Science and Technology Building for new faculty hires in Biomedical and Chemical and Biological Engineering.

Through a generous donation from the Tisch family and with support from Athletics' Board of Overseers, Tufts University athletic facilities will undergo a major upgrade in the next few years. The accompanying renovation will help revitalize the Computer Science and Electrical and Computer Engineering departments.

Perhaps most exciting, we are now in the program planning stage for a new Integrated Lab Complex that will house cross-departmental research and education efforts in two strategic areas: bioengineering and engineering for sustainability. The addition of this new complex will provide the much-needed infrastructure to support the SOE's aspirations for leadership in these areas.
